Siemens Transportation Western Elite StockCar
Tour
Mid West Combustion
Points Final - September 13, 2008 Race Recap
Another terrific night of racing at Auto
Clearing Motor Speedway as the Western Elite
StockCar Tour wrapped up their sophomore season
and the Tiger Automotive Street Stocks put their
second last race of the season in the books.
The weatherman cooperated Saturday night as the
evening stayed pleasant, not cooling off until
after the final checkered flag.
The highlight of the night was the seventh
consecutive win by Dan Shirley in the Co-op
Grand Prix and his second Siemens WEST
championship in a row. Dan got off to a good
start and never looked backed through the 125
lap Express Foods main feature race. Les
Harding, who has been working his way through
the field all year took second place in the
feature with his Sherwood Chevrolet Monte Carlo
and Nathaniel Wagner had his best finish in his
Joe Gibbs Driven Monte Carlo, taking the third
spot on the podium.
It was the night that was not to be for the #95
Team Mopar Dodge Charger of Paul Savoie as he
was sent home early for the second time this
year after a persistent knock developed in his
motor during afternoon practice. Paul had his
sights set on taking a checkered flag from Dan
Shirley as he was running better lap times than
Dan during practice on Tuesday night.
Devon Brown, who finished second in points with
his #51 Brown Oval Auto Sports Monte Carlo, was
off the pace through the evening and couldn’t
manage better than fifth place in the feature.
Ben Busch, coming in third on the season,
obviously has some more work to do on his #49
Northern Lights Casino Grand Prix, as he
finished in seventh spot in the feature. Race
fans will remember his car went home in pieces
two weeks ago after a fiery crash with the back
wall.
In Tiger Automotive Street Stock action, Les
Hillacre and Todd Pluhator showed they are not
done challenging Cory Kallis for the
championship. Les Hillacre was first to the
finish line with his #17 Nu-Fab Camaro in the 50
lap Tiger Automotive feature. Cory Kallis was a
close second with the #99 Adobe Inn Monte Carlo
and Todd Pluhator was third in his #15 Good
Times Racing Camaro.
Cory Kallis hangs onto his slim lead in the
Tiger Automotive Street Stock Championship point
race, with Todd Pluhator sitting in second and
Les Hillacre in third. It all adds up to some
interesting racing next week as the Tiger
Automotive Street Stocks will take to the track
for their final time next Saturday for their
championship points final.
Also on the track next week is the ARCA West
Mac’s Series Super Late Model Border Challenge,
with a grueling 150 lap feature to top off the
night. This is the second last race of the
season in this eight race series.
The ARCA West Mac’s series started their season
off in Saskatoon this past May and have had runs
in Vernon, Calgary, Medicine Hat and Kalispell.
Saskatoon racer Greg Vangool is sitting in third
place in the series standings after a second
place finish last week in Calgary. Trevor Emond
of Edmonton leads the championship chase, while
Brian Levant of Calgary is second.
Racing action starts at 7:00pm on Saturday,
September 20, with the front gates open at 5:30.

Saturday Night
Excitement & Heartbreak - August 30, 2008 Race
Recap
With new cars still joining
the field, the Siemens Western Elite StockCar
Tour put on some exciting racing Saturday night
at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Cal Vance out
of Medicine Hat hit the track for the second
time this year after running with the WEST in
Regina on July 26 and Wheeler Boys had his new
#50 out for the first time. It wasn’t the best
race day for Wheeler, who is familiar to
Saskatoon fans for his IMCA Modified racing.
With 11 laps remaining in the 125 lap Redline
Harley Davidson Express Foods feature, the
differential on the #50 locked up. This caused
the driveshaft to rip the back end of the
transmission off, spraying gear oil through
corner two and the back straight. #49 Ben Busch
got caught up in the gear oil and slammed into
the wall hard and sandwiched by the #50 as the
front end of Ben’s car was engulfed in flames.
This caused a chain reaction with three other
cars getting involved in the crash and several
other cars strewn about the back straight as
they slipped in the oil.
The crash left a very frustrated Ben Busch, who
had been running second in the points standings,
on the sideline for the rest of the race
assessing the damage and contemplating whether
he can make the last race for the WESTour in two
weeks. Bad things happen in racing, but it is
truly heartbreaking when you see a crash this
major with any car, particularly the Busch
family who have been huge supporters of the
Western Elite series from the start.
Dan Shirley of Saskatoon won the 125 lap feature
in the #46 Finesse Racing Co-op Grand Prix.
Devon Brown of Hershel was second in the #51
Brown Oval Auto Sports Impala SS and Les Harding
of Warman came in third in the #1 Sherwood
Chevrolet 2008 Monte Carlo. Jason Hankewhich of
Kindersley in the #94 Digger Racing Monte Carlo
and Nathaniel Wagner from Hague in the #89 Burn
Biodiesel Monte Carlo rounded out the top five.
Over in the Street Stock division, the points
lead sea-saw battle continued. After leading
the points race for several weeks and after a
bad night last week, Cory Kallis went into the
night seven points behind Todd Pluhator.
Saturday night the bad luck was with Todd’s
team, particularly in the Qualifier race when a
flat tire gave Pluhator a last place finish in
that race. Combine that with Kallis finishing
one position ahead of Todd in the Heat Race and
two positions ahead in the Feature, Kallis
finished the night back atop the points
standings.
The Tiger Automotive Street Stock 50 lap feature
was won by Cory Kallis in his #99 Adobe Inn
Monte Carlo SS. Les Hillacre was second in the
#17 Nu-Fab Camaro and Todd Pluhator crossed
third in the #15 Good Times racing Camaro. The
#27 Lone Star Parts Camaro of Scott Lucas and
the #98 Value Tire Camaro of Bryan Johnson
rounded out the top five.
Complete results and points standings will be
available at

Next week will see racing on Saturday, September
6 with the season final for the Super Truck
Series. The overall champion of the JB Water
and Vacuum Service Super Truck Racing Series
will be crowned, as well as the champion of the
four race Saskatoon Series. The winner of the
Saskatoon Series will be awarded a trip to
Martinsville Virginia in October for the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Tums QuickPak 500.
Larry Cramer of Calgary has a slim 10 point lead
over Dan Saunders of Edmonton in the Saskatoon
Series, while Dan Saunders is the overall series
leader going into the weekend.
Joining the Super Trucks will be the Parts
Source Mini Stock Division, where Todd Jalbert
has a narrow seven point lead over Aaron
Anderson, and the Hertz Equipment Rental Thunder
Stock Division, where Rylan Utigard and Mickey
Pogoda are battling for the championship. Front
gates open at 5:30, with racing starting at
7:00pm on September 6
Stock car
racer’s family and friends an integral part of
his sport

RICK NORTHROP
The Prince Albert Daily Herald
Ben Busch’s worst crash and best
season converged in one moment last year.
During the CTV 125 at Auto Clearing Motor
Speedway in Saskatoon, another car spun out of
control in front of Busch’s 400 horsepower
Pontiac Grand Prix. Busch was flirting with 100
m.p.h at the time, meaning he had split seconds
to react.
Plowing headlong into the car in front of him,
Busch was hit from behind in a chain reaction
that decommissioned his car for the remainder of
the race.
He walked away from the crash and reflects on
the crash as just one of those things that
happen in the course of doing something you
love.
“With racing there are good days and bad days,
as in any sport,” said Busch.
The Pontiac didn’t fare as well, but the
incident serves to illustrate one of the more
interesting aspects surrounding amateur racing
culture.
Friends, family, neighbours and even the odd
co-worker pitch in spare time to help out racers
maintain cars constantly chewing through parts
like so much bubblegum.
Busch’s daughters, Sarah and Shantal, serve as
pit crew, spotting races and radioing in
instructions to their dad over walkie-talkies.
His wife, Sandra is integral to Prince Albert’s
version of Busch racing.
Soon after the crash, with his car in the
garage, Busch had competitors lining up to offer
him their spare cars so he could keep the
season’s momentum going. Busch was sitting in
third place at the time of his crash and missing
a race might mean looking from the outside in on
a podium finish.
With three races remaining in the 2008 season
Busch holds a slim lead over Devon Brown of
Herschel, Sask., for second place in the Siemens
Western Elite Division stockcar standings. The
next race is scheduled for Aug. 2.
The racing community is a tight one. Some of his
pit crew are also his best fans.
Busch said family friends Ray Willis and Kevin
Friesen volunteer their time.
At the dawn of each new racing season Busch’s
family set goals for the year.
“Most of the time the goal is having fun and
keeping my family involved,” said Busch.
On Busch’s shop shelf sits a cup full of
nameplates taken off trophies which are then
returned to be re-used by race organizers.
Nearly every penny won is redirected into paying
for new parts — for example, each set of tires,
good for one race, cost $600 — so where’s the
payoff?
“When I get behind the wheel and you hear the
engine, that’s when I feel alive,” said Busch.

It isn't NASCAR, but it's the
next closest thing for auto racing fans in
Saskatchewan.The
Siemens Western Elite StockCar Tour will be
hitting Kings Park Speedway in Regina today for
the Express Foods 125. About 15 drivers are
expected to compete in the event, which will
feature stock cars very similar to those seen on
the popular NASCAR circuit.
"Two years ago NASCAR
purchased the CASCAR series in Canada and
changed the tour that was set up," said John
Buss, the president of Kings Park Speedway.
"What it meant was that there were no more races
for the tracks in the west and the drivers were
a little upset that they were being left out.
"When that happened, the
Siemens Transportation Group decided to sponsor
its own tour based out of Saskatoon so that the
cars in the west had something to compete in."
The Express Foods 125 is the
feature race tonight at Kings Park. The evening
begins at 5:20 p.m. and will also showcase
regular races in the Bomber, Street Stock, and
Sask Pro 4 divisions.
Undoubtedly, the main
attraction is the Express Foods 125.
"This is the first time the
tour has come to Regina and there haven't been
cars of this calibre here since 2006," said
Herman Hordal, a spokesman for the Siemens
Western Elite StockCar Tour.
"The tour is running seven
races this year with six of them in Saskatoon
and this one in Regina. We're extremely excited
to bring this kind of race to a speedway that we
think can be a major partner in the future."
The first car to complete 125
laps will be the winner. The race rules also
mandate that all 125 laps be completed under a
green flag, meaning that laps during a caution
won't be counted.
The race is expected to
attract the top drivers from Saskatchewan as
well as a couple from Alberta. If the race is a
success, Hordal can see many future races of the
Siemens Tour in Regina's future.
"I can see this kind of race
leading to more shared races and tours between
Auto Clearing in Saskatoon and Kings Park in
Regina," said Hordal. "It's possible we could
also eventually see a kind of provincial
championship as long as we can sort through
different standards and other regulations."
Tickets for today's events at
Kings Park are $10 with more than 400 already
sold. The track can hold up to 2,000 so prime
seating is still available.
For families wishing to
attend, there is a nearby park for kids. If
spectators want a more boisterous atmosphere,
there is also a beer garden that will open up at
the conclusion of the events.
"This is really a treat to get
this kind of competition back at the track after
the wait that we had to endure," said Buss.
"I think that if this race
goes off really well then we'll see a renewed
interest in it the next time it comes to the
city."

Shirley has enough traction to win
rain-shortened race - (The Star Phoenix)
| |
| Cory Wolfe |
| The Star Phoenix |
Monday, May 26, 2008
Dan Shirley's pimped-out Pontiac
could've used one more option -- windshield wipers.
The Saskatoon driver had to feel his
way around a sometimes-treacherous track Saturday before
claiming victory in the rain-shortened Express Foods 125
at Auto Clearing Speedway.
"I was starting to slow down because
it's very unnerving to see your windshield filled with
water and slick tires do not take kindly to a wet race
track," said Shirley.
The 44-year-old elementary school
teacher didn't get to take the checkered flag in the
season-opener for the Siemens Western Elite Stock-car
Tour (WEST). Officials sent drivers to the pits after 45
laps and the race, scheduled for 125 laps, was called 30
minutes later.
Shirley, who posted the fastest
qualifying time, held off Ben Busch's hard-charging
Pontiac. The Prince Albert driver clocked the best lap
times for a stretch, but he could not get around
Shirley, the series' defending champ.
"About 25 laps in, we were giving a
little run," said Busch. "I thought, well, there's a lot
of race to go and he and I seemed to be out in front, so
I figured I'd back off just a little bit. I guess that
was maybe a mistake. On the other hand, Dan is such a
good driver so I was just following him and learning
some things."
Despite conditions conducive to
crashes, nobody took any unnecessary risks when the rain
started to fall.
"I slowed down and put my hand up a
couple of times and Ben was respectful of that," said
Shirley. "We want to bring these (cars) home in one
piece. We'll put 25 race cars out on a nice, warm
Saturday night and then we'll have some action."
The anticipation of bad weather kept
all but one Alberta driver, Calgary's Scott Kessler,
from trekking to Saskatoon on Saturday. The field
dwindled to nine cars when Saskatoon's Paul Savoie
experienced transmission trouble during qualifying.
Engine problems forced Kindersley's Jason Hankewich to
the sidelines before the race was 25 laps old.
The jinxed race came to a merciful end
when rain made the asphalt surface unsafe for the rest
of the field.
While Shirley breathed a sigh of
relief, Busch and third-place finisher Devon Brown
couldn't help but wish for more race.
"I was starting to pick it up and I
think by the end of the race we would have had a good
car," said Brown, who hails from Herschel. "We would
have been up there. It's kind of disappointing because
we definitely had the car set up for a long run."
The Siemens WEST Series resumes June 7
in Saskatoon. The two-year-old tour, which rose out of
the ashes of the former CASCAR Series, also features
stops in Regina and Calgary.
"We're definitely going to see higher
car counts," said Brown. "The series is a good idea.
It's going to take a few years to put it together. The
group kind of divided when CASCAR went -- half the guys
went NASCAR and half the guys couldn't afford to go
NASCAR. But in a couple of years, you're going to see
more guys interested in this series, maybe even by the
end of this year."
Despite the abbreviated opener, Brown
couldn't help but smile.
"We had fun," he said. "Nobody's hurt
and no cars got wrecked. It's always good to see cars go
on the trailer."

Province provides $430,000 for
Central Alberta Raceways Expansion
Rimbey benefitting from Major Community Facilities Program
Rimbey... The Alberta
government is contributing $430,000 to the expansion of the
Central Alberta Raceways at the Rimbey Kinsmen Motorsports Park.
Started in 2003, Central Alberta Raceways hosts a number of
racing events each year and attracts over 15,000 racers and
racing fans from across the province and Western Canada.
“Whether it’s on the snow or on the track, racing is a sport
enjoyed by Albertans all year round,” said Hector Goudreau,
Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture. “We are
pleased to support a project that will provide thrills and
excitement for local spectators and visitors from around the
world.”
The $430,000 grant will go towards the expansion of the racing
venue and construction of a new paved track. The total project
cost is an estimated $869,000 and is part of a long range
development plan to make the Rimbey Motorsports Park a premier
multi-motor sport racing venue in Western Canada.
Funds for the expansion are being provided as part of the
Alberta government’s Major Community Facilities Program. This
two-year, $280-million lottery-funded program, helps
municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Aboriginal
communities plan, upgrade or build major public-use facilities
that enhance community life.
“This new track is estimated to be one of the longest paved drag
racing tracks in Alberta,” said Ray Prins, MLA for Lacombe-Ponoka.
“We hope this expansion will help draw more than double the
number of people that come to the Raceways each year.”
Jeff Makofka, President of the Rimbey Kinsmen Club added, “Our
community project has come a long way and we will now be able to
get into the next gear. The community support has been
outstanding and with these new funds we can proceed with the
completion of a new drag strip for Alberta.”
Supporting community organizations and investing in
infrastructure are part of Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to secure
Alberta’s future by building communities, greening our growth
and creating opportunity. |

Western Elite Division Trophies
Spread Around
As was the case with the Sport Compact Mini Stock Division, the
Western Elite Division Trophies handed out at Saturday's
Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet
were spread around quite a bit. Seven different Western Elite
drivers took home some hardware on Saturday.
Division Champion, #46 Dan Shirley
took home both Championship Trophy and Most Feature Wins
Trophies, two trophies which went to the same drivers in every
division other than the Lucas Oil Super Late Model Division.
The only other double winner in the Western Elite Division on
Saturday night was #49 Ben Busch, who nabbed both the Most
Improved Driver and Most Gentlemanly Driver Awards. Busch who
quite possibly had his best year of racing yet, was certainly
deserving of both awards. |

 |
Whilst Rookie-of-the-Year honors in
the Western Elite Division went to #48 Chris Dennis, Chris's
brother #24 Scott Dennis took home the 3rd Place Trophy. The
Dennis's deserve added recognition for making the trip from
Edmonton, Alberta to take in all eight Western Elite Division
races held at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.
Les Harding, who changed his car number from #29 to #69 mid way
through the year in an attempt to change his 'luck', was the
most obvious choice to receive the Phoenix Award for overcoming
adversity during the year. Rounding out the Western Elite trophy
winners were #21 Nick Allen who took home the 2nd Place Trophy
and #95 Paul Savoie who went home with the Best Looking Car and
Crew Trophy. [Click here for full list of awards] |
